Artist Statement :

Utilizing a tableau of pop culture, my artwork is a stage which demonstrates the search for individual identity within the programmatic social structures of popular culture. Everything experienced has been reinforced by an extended reality of media, legends and social standards. Whether realized or not we use these ele- ments in defining and creating the symphony of self discovery.

My process is to use myself, my own encounters and ideas to define the thin line between cultural expecta- tions and self expectations. I approach my medium, photography and video, in a fashion that recognizes an artificial presence. Self-portraiture with its camera awareness aids the construction of an identity.

Within my latest body of work I focus on the idea of ready-made remedies that are socially acceptable for self-discovery via mass-produced books, manuals, products, and rituals. Within this fast-paced information rich culture, it is easy to accept these prepackaged remedies but they are only temporary fixes.

My work looks at the physical and mental process and significance of these ‘surface’ remedies. For exam- ple, in my current series, “Cover”, I chose to use origami as an artificial covering in order to portray an idea which became a ritual.
